What Does A Balanced Life Actually Look Like?

27 August 2026

We often talk about wanting a more balanced life as though balance were a destination. Something we could finally arrive at once the right things were in place: the right job, enough time for family, a little more sleep, perhaps a hobby or two, and a calendar that doesn’t make us want to hide. Plot twist: but life rarely works that way. This blog post was inspired by my recently launched Life Balance Coaching service, so let’s chat about life balance now!

So How Does Life Balance Work?

What feels balanced today may feel completely different six months from now. Our circumstances change, and our priorities change.

Simply put, we change. We are allowed to change, but also, sometimes change is forced on us whether we welcome it or not.

This is one of the reasons I see life balance not as a fixed state to achieve, but as something we continually create and re-create.

When Life Feels Slightly Out Of Tune

Sometimes it is obvious that something isn’t working.

You might be exhausted from giving so much of yourself to other people. Your career may be taking up more and more of your time. Perhaps the children have left home and the house suddenly feels much bigger than it needs to be. Or maybe you have simply realised that you can’t remember the last time you did something purely because you enjoyed it.

And sometimes nothing is obviously wrong. You may look at your life and think, “I’m fine. Everything is fine, really!”

Yet there is a vague feeling that something is off. Maybe one area of your life receives almost all your attention whilst another has quietly disappeared into the background. Maybe you have become so accustomed to your routines that you no longer stop to question whether they still suit the person you are today.

This is where life balance can become an interesting—and sometimes surprisingly challenging—subject.

Balance Doesn’t Look The Same For Everyone

There is no universal formula for a balanced life. Bad news? Good news?

What feels wonderfully balanced to one person might feel restrictive or completely overwhelming to another.

One person may thrive on a busy social calendar, while another needs considerable time alone (hello introverts!). One person may love their demanding career and happily organise the rest of life around it. Someone else may realise that work has gradually become the centre of everything, leaving very little space for relationships, creativity, rest or play.

So the question isn’t necessarily “How do I make every part of my life equal?”, but rather it may be much more useful to ask “What would balance look like for me, at this point in my life?”

The latter question opens up considerably more possibilities.

Start By Noticing What Is Getting Too Much Or Too Little

Creating more balance begins with awareness. What areas of your life currently take up most of your energy, time and attention? And what areas aren’t getting enough?

Perhaps work is thriving while your friendships have become an afterthought. Perhaps you are wonderfully available to everyone else, but rarely make time for yourself. Maybe your home, finances or health demand your attention whilst the activities that make you feel like you have gradually disappeared.

None of this means that you have failed. Life is full of seasons, as sometimes a particular area genuinely needs more of us. The useful part is noticing whether the current arrangement is still working for you.

What If You Don’t Know What Needs To Change?

This is where things can become particularly difficult. You may know that you want something to be different without knowing exactly what that “something” is.

You might have a generic sense of blah, you might be at a crossroads and unsure which direction to take, or perhaps your life is objectively okay, but you have a growing feeling that you are ready for something to change. When we are immersed in our everyday lives, it can be surprisingly difficult to see the bigger picture. We are busy completing the next task, answering the next message and taking care of the next person.

Sometimes what helps is having space to stop, not to be told what to do, but to think.

This Is Where Life Balance Coaching Can Help

Life Balance Coaching offers a dedicated space to step back and look at the whole picture. Together, we can explore the different areas of your life, identify what currently works and what doesn’t, and consider what balance means for you.

You remain the expert on your own life. My role as a coach is to facilitate the process: to listen, ask questions, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and help you explore perspectives you might not have considered on your own.

The goal isn’t to create somebody else’s version of a balanced life, but it is to help you understand your own. From there, we can begin turning awareness into action. That might mean changing a priority, setting a boundary, making a decision, creating space for something you have been missing, or simply seeing your situation differently. And your priorities are allowed to change along the way.

A One-Month Reset For Your Life Balance

I have recently launched a 1-month Life Balance Coaching programme for people who are ready to take a closer look at their current situation and make meaningful changes.

The programme begins with a 90-minute session where we take stock of where you are, what you are hoping to achieve and what might be getting in the way. We then meet weekly for four 60-minute coaching sessions, with a few tailored resources to support your thinking and actions between sessions.

It is not about fixing your entire life in a month, but about creating focused space to understand where you are, decide what matters, and start moving intentionally towards the change you want.

Balance isn’t something we achieve once and keep forever. Instead, it is something we learn to notice, adjust and create again as life changes.

Your life doesn’t have to look perfectly balanced. It simply needs to feel more intentionally yours.
