After skipping a month of discussing progress, here is a wrap-up of both June and July in one neat package. The August project gets a proper reveal, too! This post is part of my blog series The Happiness Project.
June Random Tasks Month
The project chosen for June was to tackle random tasks. These imcluded sewing curtains, which didn’t happen since other tinier stuff got in the way. But done!
I have a half-yearly system for home maintenance, but for several years it has been a massive challenge to stick with. As concluded in previous blog posts, I have moved several times within a short timespan, so of course the apartment layouts have never been the same. As a result, it has been very difficult to deal with a constantly changing storage solution, too.
My hope is to remain in my current flat for a longer time, which would not only allow me to create a fabulous, permanent (for this floor plan) storage situation, but also let me settle emotionally, without fear of the dreaded something happening once again.
With this backstory out of the way, I conclude that many of the June tasks became about preparing for July, when the six-month rotation would start again. This was subconsciously decided, because once July came around I was excited to start afresh from rotation month 1.
My half-yearly system is such a massive topic that I want to create a full course about it in which I share my best tips so you can create your own custom plan, which can work even if you have a full-time job.
I will cover the main purpose of it here on the blog at some point, but to not veer off track now, the remaining thoughts on June are that my time was really well spent.
July Queer Eye Month
Huh? Yes, July aka the month of my Queer Eye binge on Netflix. I asked myself what I would need during a month of some days of work, mostly of vacation, and also more progress at home. My answer was to watch Queer Eye episodes.
I ended up watching all seven seasons. It was a complete immersion.
It showed me over and over how important it is to get the whole foundation of one’s life sorted. Clean, mended, neat, pretty, cared for. Internal self, external self, home, and relationships.
Every single participant absolutely glowed at the end, and it didn’t matter what size, looks, skin colour, religious beliefs, political ideas, or other stuff they represented. All homes and other spaces got wonderful makeovers, too, and I wanted to work on a similar overhaul for myself.
So it began in July and has continued in August. And it feels wonderful.
I don’t mind going slow, because I am building for a middle-aged me, whose priorities are constantly shifting in an increasingly healthy direction.
August Interior Decoration Month
This is the first month of drifting into something without having planned the project in advance.
I have looked at my now rather yellow bookshelf of pine tree by Lundia for a couple of decades, and since my sister wanted to downsize from two tall Billy bookshelves with half-glass doors, she asked whether I would take them. Oh yes!
We are no removals crew, so the process of moving the two shelves from her flat to mine was no small effort. Currently I am amidst moving books from one bookshelf to the other, and to complete this endeavour, the old shelf needs to be put in my basement storage.
You may have caught the fact that books are moving to a different location, too. Indeed. This will allow me to rearrange the sofa to stand up against a wall later, which will create an airier overall layout in the living room. After almost a year in the flat, I have lived in it long enough to discover a few aspects that don’t yet work optimally.
Admittedly it is a bit sweaty to do these huge switcheroos in the middle of summer, but with great likelihood I will start catching colds soon. Also, the decreasing light means everything will feel heavier, so it is a bit of a race against time.
There are a few other furniture relocations on the possible list, too, so I am eager about this month.
